Feedsack fabrics are the cotton fabrics that were produced to hold flour, sugar, and other grains while transporting them around the country. With the invention of the sewing machine these sacks became the packaging of choice rather than wooden or tin boxes. These sacks were a bonus that came with buying essentials for the home or farm. They were something soft and pretty in times of hardship and rationing in the early 1900's. They were then used to make clothing and quilts.
The fabrics were often brightly colored with florals, dots, nursery rhymes, children's prints as well as advertising logos and stamps. To learn more about feedsacks we recommend: “Feed Sacks – Beautiful Quilts from Humble Beginnings” by Edie McGinnis. It's a great book from Kansas City Star Quilts with fun quilts to make along with needle punch and stitchery projects. There's even a history lesson on the invention of the sewing machine and its effect on the development of feedsack fabrics and how collectible they have become.
