Introduction to Free Motion Quilting
Introduction to Free Motion Quilting Price: $45.00
Intro to Free-Motion Quilting
Saturday, March 18, 10am-4pm. Class fee: $45

With your domestic sewing machine, you can create heirloom quilts. This beginner class will cover topics ranging from marking your quilt, batting choices, pinning your quilt, working with stencils, free motion fills, grid work, to alternate ways to transfer designs to your quilt tops. Learn to pin your quilt and prepare it for quilting. Then dive in and practice free-motion stitch in the ditch, quilting loops, curves, and straight lines, all using your home sewing machine.

Supply List:
  • One Ohio Star block with borders (instructions will be emailed to those who register early). Center square may be a print or fussy cut; for hour-glass units, corner squares, and border, please use a small print, tone-on-tone, or solid so your quilting will show.
  • Two (2) ~18” muslin or light colored cotton quilt sandwiches. Fat quarters are a great size for these. Please pre-cut and mark per instructions below prior to class.
  • Sewing Machine in good working order with instruction manual. For ideal machine quilting you should be able to drop or cover your feed dogs.
  • Free motion quilting foot or darning foot for machine. If unsure, bring all of the feet for your machine. No walking foot please.
  • Plexiglas surround for your machine (e.g., Sew-Steady table) or a small surround that comes with some machines is fine. If you don’t have one, for this class you will be okay with just the machine.
  • Scissors (small). A small pair of embroidery scissors works well.
  • 1 pkg. Schmetz Sharp or Microtex #80 machine needles
  • Safety pins ~100 (curved #1 recommended)
  • Blue water soluble marking pen or white ceramic pencil (e.g., SewLine or Fons & Porter) for marking designs. Chaco Liners are also a good option. (Must be water soluble).
  • Threads for stitching: Contrasting thread for practice squares, matching thread for Ohio Star block. Recommended threads are Aurifil 50 weight cotton, Gutterman 50 weight cotton, YLI Machine Quilting Thread.
  • Monofilament thread for stitch-in-the-ditch. Recommend YLI Wonder Invisible nylon.
  • Your choice of something to give your fingers traction as you move the fabric sandwich under the needle. Suggestions include Machingers or Grabaroos quilting gloves, garden gloves with rubber nubs on fingertips, finger cots. Neutrogena Intensive Moisture Wrap, a non-greasy lotion, will be available in class and gives nice traction when quilting.

Recommended Battings: Quilter’s Dream Cotton, Quilters Dream Wool, Warm and Natural, Warm and White, Hobbs 80/20 blend.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class to allow plenty of time to set up your machine.
