Natalie Bird from The Birdhouse Designs

Natalie Bird started designing in 2000, as a way to earn a little money for a new sewing machine. I started out making cloth dolls and stitcheries, then became interested in patchwork. I instantly felt at home with patchwork and quilting. I like to combine different elements into my work; stitchery/embroidery, applique, wool applique, English paper-piecing and machine piecing. As well as patterns for quilts, bags, sewing bits n’ bobs, cushions... I really enjoy working on books. I have 8 books so far, covering themes such as Fairies, Friendship, Christmas, and more. Here is a sampling of Natalie’s works that Buggy Barn has enjoyed making and carrying in our store. Check out this one or this one!

Gail Pan from Gail Pan Designs, Melbourne, Australia

I first started quilting about 10 years ago after many years of various crafts including cross stitch. I have been sewing as long as I remember! My mum is a dressmaker and I was always playing with her scraps. I sewed clothes for my Barbie doll as well as soft toys. A few friends were starting patchwork and I thought that I might have a go; it certainly was a lot quicker than cross stitch! After making a few quilts I decided to start designing my own and was encouraged by a friend who was just starting a patchwork business. I approached a few shops and slowly began to build my business. With the support of my husband I have been able to give up part time work outside the home and work on designing quilts, stitcheries and bags.
I am lucky to live at the foothills of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, Australia. Surrounded by gorgeous forests and hills, I am able to find such wonderful inspiration. I live with my husband and three sons in a lovely old home which we love to decorate with antiques and of course quilts! My husband also runs his own business from home which means we see a lot of each other! I have a large room for a studio with a huge window overlooking my backyard, which lets in lots of natural light. This is where I spend a lot of time, “playing” with fabric and sketching lots of ideas.
I have a great circle of friends, including other fantastic designers, and we are all addicted to fabric! We love to meet once a month to sit and sew and solve the problems of the world (as well as each other!), what a wonderful group of ladies I have found! Of course we share
other things as well as our love of fabric and often we can be found at a divine local café for lunch or out shopping for shoes!
You can also find me teaching at local shops and all over Australia. It is wonderful to be able to share my love of patchwork and quilting with other women. I have also been able to share my love of quilting around the world, teaching in Europe and meeting some wonderful women who share in my passion as much as I do.
I feel blessed to have such a fortunate life and hope to continue to create projects that give such joy to women all over the world.
